about

Shepherd and traditional fiddler, piper and composer Archie Dagg (d.1990), is the composer of Joe Huttonʼs March. He was born at Linbriggs, in Upper Coquetdale, in 1899 and lived all his life in that part of Northumberland, apart from his time in the Army at the end of the Great War. We play only the first two parts of the four part Barren Rocks of Aden. Said to have been composed in the mid-c19th by James Mauchline and left untitled, Pipe Major Alexander Mackellar re-arranged and named the tune whilst on station in Aden with a detachment of the 78th Seaforth Highlanders in the mid-1960s.
