about

Originally a composition of John Charles White and dating from 1815, The Cumberland Reel has been adapted over the years as the melody for songs including Stanla Market by Tommy Armstrong – ʻThe Pitman Poetʼ – and A W Humphreysʼ King of the Cannibal Islands published c.1830. The Squirrel in the Tree can be heard across the eastern seaboard of Canada in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and across Nova Scotia. It has been credited to Colin MacLean of Glenville, Cape Breton Island.
